LEADERS IN ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION COME TOGETHER DURING NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
Donor Alliance and the American Transplant Foundation partner with Safeway to encourage people to register to be organ and tissue donors
Denver—March 26, 2007—With more than 1,700 people in Colorado and Wyoming waiting for an organ transplant, Donor Alliance and the American Transplant Foundation have partnered with Safeway to educate the public about the need for organ and tissue donation and encourage Coloradans to become registered donors. Throughout the month of April, Safeway will display donor registry forms at all of its pharmacies throughout Colorado.
“We are pleased that Safeway has taken on this very important initiative to educate the public about the growing need for organ and tissue transplants in our state,” said Sue Dunn, CEO of Donor Alliance. “Working with companies like Safeway who champion this cause will help reduce the waiting list by showing the public what they can do to help.”
"We applaud Safeway's community leadership in actively promoting organ and tissue donor education and awareness" said Heidi Heltzel, executive director of the American Transplant Foundation. "Participation by businesses such as Safeway is essential to eliminating the growing gap between supply and demand, ultimately saving lives."
“Grocery stores are the center of many communities. We bring people together from around the community to shop, meet with friends and neighbors and collect useful information. Safeway is pleased to support National Donate Life Month by displaying donor registry forms at our pharmacies,” said Kris Staaf, spokeswoman for Safeway.
President Bush issued a proclamation in 2003 designating the month of April to be observed as National Donate Life Month and a time to raise public awareness of the critical need for organ, tissue, marrow and blood donation.
