Older Americans Month: You’re NEVER Too Old to Say Yes and Save Lives!

About Older Americans Month:

Every year when May rolls around, so too does the observance, Older American’s Month. The Administration for Community Living leads the observation and gives the month a new theme every year. This year, the theme is Connect, Create and Contribute – encouraging older Americans to connect with loved ones and contribute their time, talent and life experience to benefit others!

In step with this year’s theme, we want to encourage older Americans to give back to their communities and others by saying Yes to organ, eye and tissue donation!

Debunking the Most Common Donation Myth: “I’m Too Old to Donate!”

FALSE – anyone of any age can say Yes and sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. Don’t rule yourself out; you can save lives! We often hear people ruling themselves out due to age or health restrictions but, there is no age limit to being a donor. People with diabetes, hepatitis and other health conditions can potentially be organ donors so please don’t rule yourself out. It’s important to let the medical professionals decide your eligibility upon death, say Yes!

Share Your Decision With Your Family:

When you say Yes to organ, eye, and tissue donation, your decision to be a donor takes priority over your family’s preferences. Discussing donation with your family will help them understand and support your decision. Having these conversations helps your family during a time of great grief and loss. Set aside some time to have a heartfelt conversation with your family. Sharing your decision to be a donor is one of the most important conversations you can have with loved ones.
