Housing Fund
Housing isn’t optional. It’s a transplant necessity
Each year, nearly 200 transplant-eligible patients need temporary housing near a Denver transplant center to meet post-surgery care requirements.
A patient receives the call they’ve been waiting for: An organ is available for transplant. It’s a moment of indescribable joy and hope. But for some transplant candidates, this moment may never come. While they may be healthy enough to be listed for an organ transplant, they do not have the means to pay for a place to stay near a transplant center.
Each year, nearly 200 transplant-eligible patients need temporary housing near a Denver transplant center to meet post-surgery care requirements. About one-third are unable to secure housing, and approximately 60 patients are denied access to lifesaving transplants as a result. Without stable lodging, patients may face delays in care, removal from transplant consideration, or poorer health outcomes. Investing in temporary housing removes a critical barrier and helps more patients receive the transplants they need to survive.
60 Lives could be Saved
Many patients denied access to transplantation have already faced years of systemic barriers and financial hardship. Often living in rural or Tribal communities far from Denver, they rely on Medicaid, disability benefits, or other limited incomes.
After exhausting every available resource, they simply cannot afford the upfront cost of temporary housing required for transplant care.
Without safe, stable housing, patients face:
- Delayed or denied transplant listing
- Higher risk of mortality and graft failure
- Reduced quality of life
- Worsening inequities in access to care
These outcomes are preventable. By removing housing as a barrier, we can help ensure that every medically eligible patient has a fair opportunity to receive a lifesaving transplant.
Why Now? Advances in transplantation mean more lives can be saved than ever before, yet many patients still face barriers that prevent access to care. Housing remains one of the most significant and solvable obstacles, leaving some patients unable to stay near transplant centers for critical treatment and recovery. By investing in temporary patient housing, you help remove this barrier, expand access to lifesaving transplants, and give more patients the opportunity to survive and thrive. Your support does more than provide lodging—it saves lives.
Join us! Help us remove one of the last preventable barriers to transplant access: safe, temporary housing. Together, we can ensure that access to a lifesaving transplant is determined by medical readiness, not financial circumstances or distance from care. Your investment expands access, improves outcomes, and ensures patients are ready when the life-changing call arrives.
Housing should not be a luxury in a person’s transplant journey—it is a clinical necessity. Together, we can make it a certainty and help save more lives.
Help Bridge the Gap: The Donor Alliance Foundation aims to raise $400,000 annually to cover the cost of 45 days of safe, clean, temporary housing for approximately 60 transplant patients and a primary caregiver each year. Short-term stays in hotels or apartments that meet transplant center requirements will offer peace of mind to families navigating an already overwhelming journey. Join us in ensuring that no one is denied a second chance at life because of where they can afford to sleep.
Long-term investment support and naming opportunities are available.
