Advocate Spotlight: Lupe Kerr

Donor Alliance volunteers and advocates are the heart and soul of our efforts to inspire and inform our community about the importance of signing up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor in Colorado and Wyoming. Each of our volunteers and advocates has their own unique and inspiring story to tell. In this advocate spotlight, meet Lupe Kerr, a Kidney Recipient from Casper, WY.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering at Donor Alliance? My favorite thing about volunteering with Donor Alliance is getting to know wonderful people that went through the donor process as supporting family, recipients or donors. I just admire the generosity of all the volunteers and I enjoy every single moment of being part of that wonderful group of people.

Why did you choose Donor Alliance as a place to volunteer? In 2019, I was admitted to the transplant waiting list, and it was not an easy process, as I have seen on TV. Thankfully, my sister in Peru traveled to be my living donor. After the transplant, a friend and fellow Advocate for Life, Laurie, mentioned that she volunteers with Donor Alliance and I just thought it was great to be involved in such a great cause; it was a perfect time for me, to volunteer close to my heart.

What is your favorite season and why? My favorite season is Spring. It’s like everything wakes up after a long winter sleep.

What is your proudest accomplishment? I am proud of being myself, of loving and trying to be supportive with my family and friends no matter the distance, and I believe as long as I am alive, I will always have the opportunity to achieve new goals.

What is the last book you read or movie you saw? Would you recommend it? there is a book I read a long time ago that is always on my mind, and once in a while I read it again, Anne Frank’s Diary. I admire the way three families embrace and fight for their lives with resilience, courage and hope and how their friends risk their own lives to help them.

What song would you sing at karaoke night? I would sing “The Greatest Love of All”.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? My mom had so much good advice for me, but one of the best is that whenever I am in a difficult situation or problem and need to cry, go ahead and cry, but when you’re done, stand up and keep going.
