Black History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans and recognize the important role African Americans have played in our country’s history. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about organ donation and the ongoing need within the African American community. Today, more than 34,000 people from the African American community nationwide are waiting for a lifesaving transplant. In Colorado and Wyoming alone, nearly 250 African Americans are currently waiting for an organ transplant

African Americans are the largest minority group in need of organ transplants. In the U.S., 30 percent of those on the national transplant waiting list are African American, and nearly 35 percent of people waiting for a kidney transplant are African American.

Why African Americans Are Disproportionately in Need of Organ Transplants

African Americans are the largest group of minorities in need of an organ transplant. In the U.S., 30 percent of those currently waiting on an organ transplant are African American, and almost 35 percent of people waiting for a kidney transplant are African American. While organs are not matched according to race or ethnicity, transplant matches made within ethnic groups can be more compatible. That is one of the reasons why it is important for people in minority communities to register their decision to be donors.

During Black History Month, organ donation conversations can help address these disparities and empower more people to make informed decisions. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and save or heal more than 75 lives through eye and tissue donation.

Colorado and Wyoming residents can register as organ, eye and tissue donors anytime.
